Antelope Canyon Travel Notes
Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon IN ARIZONA, on Navajo land east of PAGE , where the Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam are located . It includes two separate scenic slot canyon sections, referred to as Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon .
The Upper Canyon is what me and Rama , my sister visited in Oct 2019.
Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding and other sub-aerial processes. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, deepening the corridors and smoothing hard edges to form characteristic “flowing” and unusual shapes.
Antelope Canyon is a popular location for photographers and sightseers. It is a source of tourism business for the Navajo Nation. It has been accessible by tour only since 1997. The Canyon is very dusty and most people use masks to cope with the fine dust particles.
There is a specialized “photographer tour” of the Upper Antelope Canyon, where participants needed to have a tripod and a DSLR camera. I shot my pictures at specific locations selected by the Navajo Guides where they could control the visitor traffic and give the photographers 3 to 5 minutes for taking pictures. I used my Nikon D 750 Full Frame Camera at 400 ASA with a Tamaron SP 15-30 – f 2.8 lens and used exposure of 2 to 3 seconds for the photographs.
Rama joined the regular visitor tour and perhaps saw more of the Canyon than what I saw. She was also able to get very good pictures on her I Phone ten !
It is one of the most spectacular natural scenic places I have seen.
